Caring with Compassion, Dignity, and Hope

At the heart of HACT’s mission lies our unwavering commitment to caring for those facing life-limiting illnesses such as AIDS and cancer. Through our Othandweni Hospice and Palliative Care Unit and community health programmes, we provide comfort, dignity, and holistic support to patients and their families during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Hospice and Palliative Care Unit

Othandweni

Othandweni,” meaning “Place of Love” in isiZulu, is the heart of our health pillar. Our 24-hour Hospice and Palliative Care Unit offers a home away from home for adults and children who are terminally ill or in need of respite during treatment. Our dedicated team provides 24-hour care, ensuring every patient receives the medical, emotional, and spiritual support they deserve in a peaceful environment. Families are welcomed with warmth and respect.

Alongside bedside care, our team also provides

Home-based care

We provide Home-based care and follow-up visits for patients discharged from the unit. These visits are crucial for monitoring recovery, managing medication, and ensuring the home environment supports ongoing wellness after an inpatient stay.

Community Testing and Screening

We offer essential community outreach services, including HIV testing, TB screening, and counselling in local communities. We make these services accessible in peri-urban and rural areas, helping individuals access vital information early, paving the way for timely treatment and support.

Caregiver Support and Confidence

We provide focused Support for caregivers, helping families manage home care with confidence and compassion. This includes practical training, resources, and emotional assistance to help families sustain a nurturing and stable environment at home.

Emotional and Spiritual Wellbeing

Our team provides Psychosocial and spiritual care for patients and families, including bereavement counselling. We are committed to ensuring that every person feels dignity, respect, and love at every stage of life , offering comfort and grace during life’s most difficult moments.

Community Health Outreach

Extending Care Beyond Our Walls

Our compassionate care extends far beyond the walls of the Hospice through our Community Health Outreach team. Our trained home-based carers and health workers provide continuous support for those living with HIV and AIDS, TB, and other chronic illnesses. This includes home-based care and follow-up visits for discharged patients, as well as essential HIV testing, TB screening, and counselling in local communities.

Through a network of trained health workers, we provide support for

Medication Adherence & ART Education

We provide essential ongoing support focused on Medication adherence and ART education for adults and youth. Success in managing chronic illness relies on consistency, so our community health workers help individuals understand their treatment plans and connect them with adherence clubs for peer support and motivation.

HIV Prevention & Testing Campaigns

To move towards AIDS-free communities, we conduct vital public health initiatives through HIV prevention and testing campaigns. By offering accessible screening and comprehensive counselling directly in local areas, we promote early diagnosis and ensure individuals receive the information and support needed to make informed life choices.

Gender-Based Violence Awareness

We actively promote Gender-based violence awareness and response. This essential component of our holistic care model focuses on education, victim support, and creating a safer environment for women, youth, and families.

Family Strengthening & Youth Empowerment

Our programmes include Family strengthening and youth empowerment programmes that build confidence and essential life skills across generations. These initiatives, like the Sinovuyo Parenting Programme , ensure that children grow up feeling safe, valued, and supported.

Each home visit, counselling session, and community workshop brings us one step closer to our vision of healthy, empowered, AIDS-free communities.
